January - March 2010
Over the last three months, the Scouts have been working hard (and having fun) doing their Creative Challenge Badge. This involves doing three different activities from various options (such as worship, performing, crafts etc.).
Firstly, the Scouts participated in a construction evening. The Scouts were challenged to build both the tallest tower and the longest bridge from a finite amount of paper and sellotape. This not only challenged their construction skills and team-work, but also made them think about whether to devote all resources to a single project, or divide the paper between the two. There were some very interesting and innovative designs as a result.
Secondly, the Scouts partook in a performance evening. Each Watch had to plan, rehearse and perform two five-minute sketches, with a variety of props and costumes to help them. There were some funny and unusual sketches as a result. See the Photo Gallery for amusing photos of the Scouts in costume.
Thirdly, we had a problem solving evening. There were three activities: a guess-what's-in-the-box challenge, a course for the Watch (with some Scouts tied together or blindfolded) to navigate around, and a challenge to move items with only the use of string. The Scouts seemed to have a great time, and there was some great teamwork on show. Congratulations to George who correctly guessing 7 out of 8 of the boxes (the average score was around 3).
Aside from the Creative Challenge, the Scouts also undertook their Chef Badge. After discussing healthy eating, each Watch planned a dinner menu (taking into consideration the need to balance food groups). The evening after each Watch made a chicken casserole, and the week after made a fruit salad. All of the Watches did very well, and all the dinners tasted very nice. There were many full Scouts (not to mention Leaders) after this evening!
We also had an emergency aid night, an exercise night, orienteering, and an evening organised and run by the Watch who gained the most amount of points (for behaviour, participation, skill etc.) last term. Thus, overall it was a varied and successful term!
