Youlbury - March 2011
During the first weekend of March, 10 of our Scouts made the trip to Youlbury Scout Centre for a weekend of exhilarating and fun activities, which work towards their Adventure Challenge badge.
The Scouts arrived bright and early on Saturday morning, eager to unpack and get started with the camp. They started by going on the Aerial Walk; the Scouts had to work their way up the climbing wall, walk across the small steps, take a leap across the gap, move along the beam (and do a little dance, if they are brave!), go across the net, then the ropes, along a small climbing wall, and then get lowered down to the ground again. Lots of the Scouts were very brave and managed to get all of the way around!
After lunch, the Scouts went on the 3G Swing; this giant swing pulls the Scouts 10 metres in the air and, at a pull of a cord, sends them shooting towards the ground. The acceleration that the Scouts undergo can reach up to three times that of gravity. There was lots of screaming from the Scouts - everyone seemed to love it!
After the swing, the Scouts had some free time before dinner to which to explore the surrounding forests and woodlands. They came back for dinner, then went for a hike towards the local village. This seemed to tire all of the Scouts out, and they went to bed very quickly after they got back!
On Sunday, the Scouts had two activities that kept their feet firmly on the ground! In the morning, they learnt how to do archery. The Scouts were separated into three groups, and had a competition to try and shoot down the balloon that were attached to their target. Although the Scouts had quite a few attempts, no one could hit it! All the Scouts tried really hard, and some of them really improved over the session.
After lunch, the Scouts went shooting. As with the archery, although some of the Scouts struggled to start with, and some of them missed the target completely on their first set of shots, they all made great improvements and did really well in the end!
At the end of the camp, everyone seemed very tired but had thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Hopefully they'll be even more Scouts going next time!
