Aqua Camp 2010

On the 18th - 20th July 2010, the 12th Didcot Scouts went to Aqua Camp, along with 15th Didcot Scouts, at Linch Hill Leisure Park. The camp was full of water based activities, which the Scouts loved!

Friday night was spent getting the tents put up and organising the sleeping arrangements, as well as checking the England - Algeria match on a big screen in one of the tents! Once the 12th and 15th joint camp was set-up, the Scouts had some soup in the mess tent and went to bed.

On Saturday the activities began. Over the course of Saturday and Sunday morning, the Scouts did six 1½ hour water based activities:

Raft Building - The Scouts were given wooden ladders, poles, plastic bottles and string. The Scouts then had to use lashings and other knots to construct a raft.
Sailing - Depending on their ability, the Scouts took out different boats and sailed around the lake.
Gig Pulling - A six-oared boat, which requiring a vast amount of team-work.
Canadian Canoeing - A three-man canoe, which the Scouts took around the lake.
Kayaking - Depending on their ability, the Scouts were put in different groups and played different games, such as running across a group of kayaks.
Water Games - The Scouts played a version of volleyball (in lots of mud) and went on a water slide into the lake.

The Scouts seemed to really enjoy these activities, and they were all really well run. As the Scouts attempted at least three new activities, they each attained their Adventure Challenge badge.

On Saturday night the Harwell Explorer Scout unit organised a Trading Post game, where the Scouts had to buy various items (wooden blocks, paper, paint, jigsaw puzzles etc.) and sell back other items (tent pegs, paintings, completed jigsaw puzzles). Everyone seemed to enjoy the game and worked well in a team.

On Sunday, after two more 90 minute activities, there was a chance for the groups to enter races on the water. The 12th Scouts entered a Gig race, and stormed to victory! Well done to everyone who took part.

Overall, the camp was a great success. Many thanks to the 15th Didcot Scout leaders for organising and cooking the food. We hope everyone had great fun and wants to return as soon as we can!
