Kayaking and Canoeing - June - July 2010
From June - July 2010 the Scouts went kayaking and canoeing at the Riverside Centre in Oxford. During the four weeks, they learnt how to kayak and canoe, and worked towards their Paddepower qualification, which forms part of the Canoeist Activity Badge.
During Week 1, the Scouts were split into two groups; half attempted kayaking and the other half canoeing. As most had not been in either before, there was lots of going around in circles! During Week 2, the Scouts attempted the other type.
This also included being pushed into the water off the side in a kayak, which almost all the Scouts were brave enough to attempt.
On Week 3, the Scouts chose their favourite type of craft, and their instructor started taking them through the Paddlepower Passport requirements. Lots of Scouts ended up jumping/falling in the water, which they seemed to greatly enjoy!
On the final week, the Scouts went out in their chosen crafts and had to "make a pizza". This included paddling backwards to "collect" some tomatoes from one of the instructors, spinning around in their boats to grate the cheese (particularly difficult in a canoe!) and going to put their pizza in the oven by paddling using only their hands. Thus, the Scouts were tested on various skills whilst still having lots of fun.
Overall, the Scouts had an excellent time. Many thanks to everyone at the Riverside Centre for making it an excellent four weeks. Hopefully many of the Scouts will carry on with this new found skill.
