January - April 2011

Over the last few months, the Scouts have been up to quite a lot of different activities and having been working towards a few badges.

Christmas__Youlbury_2011_and_FairTrade_Fortnight_040_1.JPG The Scouts had an evening of problem solving, teamwork, and construction which went towards their Creative Challenge. Amongst other things, the Scouts had to stand in a group, hold onto someones' hand, and try and unravel themselves. The Scouts had a make the tallest tower with a limited amount of paper and string. The Scouts also had another construction later on in the term; both of the evenings seemed to inspire the Scouts, and there was lots of good teamwork on show.

We also had a couple of nights about knots - we went through reef knots, clove hitches, and other important knots that the Scouts should know. Later on in the term, the Scouts went to the Adventure Dolphin climbing wall in Newbury; during these two evenings, the Scouts need to tie the figure-of-eight knot on their harnesses, so the knot evenings gave them a helping hand towards doing these!

Christmas__Youlbury_2011_and_FairTrade_Fortnight_120_1.JPG Later in the term, the Scouts had a couple of evenings looking at the topic of Fair Trade for the Fair Trade Fortnight. This went towards their Global Challenge and Promise Challenge badges. We looked into the issues of chocolate farmers and how much money they receive (with the help of some Fair Trade chocolate for them to eat!) - the Scouts were shocked about how little the farmers actually get for their work. They also took on different roles in the coffee production, and discussed how much money they should each receive. The Scouts really got engaged with the subject, and did really well.

Christmas__Youlbury_2011_and_FairTrade_Fortnight_119_1.JPG The Scouts also had an evening of cooking as part of their Chef Badge. After they learnt about Fair Trade topics, they made some Fair Trade chocolate crispy cakes (with some Fair Trade bananas to snack on!). All the Scouts seemed to love this, and it linked the topics we'd discussed previously really well.

We also went to the Adventure Dolphin climbing wall and Youlbury for a weekend camp - don't forget to check out the videos and photos from these!
