Climbing Wall at Newbury, March 2011

The last two weeks, on Wednesday, 12th Didcot Scouts went to an indoor climbing wall at the Adventure Dolphin Centre in Newbury. The first week they had an introduction to climbing that included an introduction to the wall, some climbing techniques and of course lots of fun games.

After that, we then learnt how to put the helmets and harnesses on safely. "Right foot in the red loop, and your left foot in the other!" the instructor said.

The Scouts were then taught how to climb and belay safely. After all the talking they finally were able to climb all the way to the top of the wall. After swapping round a couple of times from climbing to belaying, the different groups went around to different sections of the wall. Some were challenging, some were easy, some even nearly made you go upside down!

After lots of hard effort, 12th Didcot Scouts went back home.

One week later, 12th Didcot Scouts arrived back at Adventure Dolphin Centre again. Firstly, they put the harnesses and helmets on, they they learnt how to tie a figure of eight knot which holds you safely in your harness while climbing. After that, they then reminded themselves of the different aspects of climbing (belaying and climbing), then finally went back on to the wall. Little did they know that they were improving their climbing skills rapidly. After lots of effort, sweat and elbow grease, they all went home.

12th Didcot Scouts really enjoyed the experience!
