Youlbury Camp - February 2010
On the weekend of 12-14th February, 12th teamed up with 23rd Didcot Sea Scouts and camped at the Youlbury Scout Activity Centre.
On the Friday night, the 18 Scouts and the 5 Leaders arrived at the dormitories and went for a night-time roam around the sprawling campsite at Youlbury. This did nothing to tire out the eager Scouts, and all were up early on Saturday morning keen for the activities that were organised for that day. Half the Scouts spent the morning on the Zip-wire, where the victims brave travel at high speed whilst suspended and harnessed from an overhead cable. Although a few didn't quite manage to brave the height, those who did (including one of the Leaders) loved it.
The other half spent their Saturday morning on the 3G Swing, so called because the riders apparently undergo 3 g of force (which is about the same as the Space Shuttle upon launch). Two people are hauled 10 metres into the air by the rest of the group. When both people agree, they pull the ripcord and swing towards the ground at high speed. All the Scouts seemed to love going on this, and it was nice for the whole group to get involved by pulling up the Scouts in the harness.
The groups swapped over after a hearty lunch. After the afternoon session, all the Scouts returned tired, but happy.
The Scouts then all took part in air-rifle shooting on Sunday, which was very fun for all concerned. Well done to Declan (from 23rd) for beating everyone at this (including the Leaders and the instructor!). After this morning session, and a spot of lunch, the Scouts returned home happy, albeit exhausted and in need of a bath. The Camp was a great success, and all the Scouts were well behaved throughout. Hopefully they, and others, will come along to the next one!
Lastly, big thanks to Craig for the cooking. All seemed to survive! Thanks to all the other Leaders too.
