Beaver camp

April - July 2010

For the first part of this term, the Scouts were working towards various badges that were aimed towards Scouting in the 21st century.

Communicator Badge has varies sections that Mobiles.pngcan be completed. This includes radio commuication, Morse Code, Semaphore and so on. However, it now includes Mobile and Internet Communication. The Scouts had to explain how they would use their mobile safely, how to send photo messages, type 50 characters per minute, how to stay safe online, and so on.

The Scouts seemed to really enjoy showing off their mobile and how well they can use it. Lots of them did enough to gain their badge. You can attempt the quiz by clicking here.

James_and_Sam_in_the_jungle_2.jpgThe Scouts also undertook their Photography Badge. To attain this, they can either look at still photography or video photography. We decided to do the latter, as many of them haven't used a video camera before. They were challenged to make short videos (based around Scouting), taking into account shot selection, zoom, panning, lighting, continuity and so on. They then used some editing software to finish their films, including sound effects, slow motion, transitions and credits.

The Scouts also visited the Abingdon Police Station as part of their Community Challenge Badge. The Scouts learnt all about the history of the Thames Valley Police, and what the police force do.

They were able to look at the equipment that the police use, including riot gear and items for chemical attacks. The Scouts were allowed to look in a riot van and hold a riot shield. Next, the Scouts looked in the CCTV room and saw the range of cameras around the local area. They then looked around custody and saw how unpleasant it can be. Lastly, a dog trainer was on hand to show them a police dog and explain what they do. The evening was very enjoyable and interesting.

For four weeks during the term, the Scouts went kayaking and canoeing in Oxford. Click here to read all about it.
