Scout Leaders
Craig Harris - Skip - Scout Section Leader
Occupation: Coach driver with Tappins
Hobbies: Cross stitch, logic problems and general telling of bad jokes!
Experiences: I am a fully qualified engineer, specialising in quality control and procedures. In the past I was a bouncer in Oxford, played for Oxford Saints American Football team, was a Lau Gar (martial art) insructor and a ballroom dancer.
My view on Scouting: Mostly I enjoy seeing the faces of the Scouts when they finally manage to achieve or make something on their own. Together with giving them the opportunity to do things that they wouldn't normally do. If it wasn't for Scouting many of the young people wouldn't have the chance to camp; it's always made worthwhile when they are enjoying it despite the wind, rain and mud!
Andy Norton
Occupation: PhD student at Oxford University. Currently studying and improving the mechanical properties of ceramics for military purposes.
Hobbies: Football. karate, reading, music, cooking and, of course, Scout related activities.
Experiences: Having graduated from Cambridge in 2009 and starting at Oxford, I've not had much experience outside of student life! I completed the Queen Scout Award in 2007 and have been to New York State for a week camping. I'm also a black belt in karate.
My view on Scouting: Having been a Beaver, Cub and Scout, I realise how important Scouting can be to children. Aside from gaining new skills and interests, it gives them the courage to tackle new problems (after spending a week in a bivouac, no challenge seems daunting!) and also helps them develop leadership skills. It's always a pleasure to see Scouts take on a leadership role and flourish. Scouts, for me, is as much about helping them to learn new skills as it is about passing on their skills to people younger and more inexperienced than themselves.
Barry Bailie
Occupation: Product manager for leisure and insurance business at an Educational IT company.
Hobbies: Powerboating, sailing, Volkswagon Golf's, surfing (well, attempting to surf) or any other water based activity.
Experiences: I completed the Queen Scout Award, but never recieved the badge! I'm now a RYA powerboat instructor, safety boat officer for Goring Thames Sailing Club and VHF licence holder.
My view on Scouting: I joined Scouting to give young people the chance to do something they otherwise wouldn't get the chance to do. It also gives me a chance to use my powerboating and sailing skills to benefit them.
