Summer Camp 2010 - 28-07-2010
The Cubs enjoyed a fun packed 4 days at 24th Abingdon's HQ in Dry Sandford on Summer Camp 2010. On Sunday 25th the Cubs arrived at lunchtime ready to set up camp. On arrival they were split into two teams. In their teams they had to erect their tents and then build a washstand and towel drier which they would be using throughout their stay. Both teams did a fantastic job; although the towel driers proved more problematic and fell over towards the end of the camp.
After setting up camp the Cubs tucked into Spag Bol which they cooked themselves.
After cooking breakfast, the second day started with Shere Khan teaching the Cubs the art of fire building. Each team had to start a fire which they would be using to cook their lunch on. Their first challenge was to find wood small enough for kindling; then they had to start the fire, keep it fuelled with wood, but not smothering the flame stopping the oxygen and putting out their efforts. Once lit they had to slowly build up the fire so that it was big enough to cook on by finding larger branches and logs to burn.
For lunch the Cubs made foiled parcels filled with cornbeef, onion, gravey, peppers & potatoe.
In the afternoon the Cubs went fishing in the stream for Crayfish. Whilst some were fishing several of them tried to build a dam in the stream to increase the depth of the water so we could submerge a crayfish pot. They caught 6 crayfish which we kept in a bucket of clean water overnight so that they could be cooked the next day. All the Cubs tried it - many of them enjoyed eating them as well as catching them!
The day finished with the Cubs singing songs around the camp fire.
Shelter buidling started the day on Tuesday and provided the Cubs with their first chance to learn some axe skills. The two teams built a fantastic shelter each but unfortunately they weren't quite big enough to shelter us all from the rain later that evening!
The Cubs next task for the day was to prepare their dinner - stew - which was going to be slow cooked throughout the day in a hay box.
In the afternoon the Cubs had some time to themselves to play football and games on field. Shere Khan also set up a water slide at the far end of the field which all the Cubs enjoyed throwing themselves down...
Daniel B managed to slide the farthest whilst Chalice managed the most elaborate slide.
The rain provided a quiet evening in the marquee catching up on their camp reports (they will all be back with you on the first week of term) and doing some puzzles. We also used the time in the marquee to cook and try the crayfish we had caught the day before.
Our final day started with taking down camp; after a final tent inspection the tents had to come down as did the wash stands and towel driers that had made it through the week. Then after lunch all the cooking equipment had to be washed and dried before being put away ready for storage. The Cubs worked hard all morning and were rewarded in the afternoon with some time on the Go Karts built by 24th Abingdon and their stilts.
The week finished with a litter pick of the site before all the Cubs went home exhausted...
